Dan
Born and raised in a small southern Oregon town, Dan Edgar spent much of his time playing and recording music. Unable to settle on playing any single instrument, he tinkered with drums, piano, keyboards and guitar. Having been inspired by a lot of European synthpop, 80's post-punk, and Alternative Rock, he really liked the idea of writing music, being in a band, and performing live. Throughout his teenage years, he was in a number of small bands such as Unturned Stones, Synthetic Joy, Nation, Russian Blue and The Other with good friends. With the realization that living in a small town didn't afford much opportunity to play live, he headed north to Portland, Oregon. Once in Portland, he quickly made friends with a number of musicians that had similar interests. During the next 15 years, he wrote music, recorded, and played live with a number of bands such as Octaval, Conduit, and most recently, Monody. It was in Monody that Dan had the privilege of playing with Dave Battrick, whom he found to be an accomplished drummer with a passion for playing live music.
Due to the long term friendships he had with the the newly-formed band Sons of Malarkey, Dave was invited to play drums with the band. It was at a small, musically-themed house party that Dan was first introduced to Sons of Malarkey's music. That night, Jason and Josh played an acoustic set to a packed house. Dan was impressed by what he heard, and decided he needed to check out the band in full form.
A few weeks later, Dan was invited to his first Sons of Malarkey show in North Portland. Per Dave's suggestion, Dan offered to help out by running their live sound that night. Dan was so impressed with the band's performance, he offered to do sound for them at upcoming shows. It was within those next few months that Dan got to know the members of the band as well as developed a fondness for the songs they were playing.
In the early spring of 2011, Dan was asked to record a 3 song demo for the band. Things came together nicely within a few weekends, and the demo was complete. Dan had such a great time working on the demo, when the time came to record the debut album for Sons of Malarkey, the decision was an easy one to make. By the end of September, the album was complete. It turned out great! Even though the "Summer of Malarkey" was a lot of work, Dan and the band had a lot of fun recording the album.
Once the album was complete, Dan realized that he was starting to go through "malarkey withdrawals", having appreciated the amount of time he had spent with the band in the prior months. As it would happen, the band had been looking for a full-time accordion player for a number of months. Dan expressed an interest in joining the band to fill this role. Dan's first "official" show as a member of Sons of Malarkey was at their CD Release show, on November 13, 2011.
P.S. - Anybody know a good sound guy? ;-)
